geko® T-3 Neuromuscular Electrostimulation Device

The geko™ deivce is a neuromuscular electrostimulation medical device and its intended use is:

- To increase blood circulation  

- For the prevention of venous thrombosis

- For the prevention and treatment of oedema

Mechanism of Action Video – geko™:

The geko™ device stimulates the common peroneal nerve activating the calf and foot muscle pumps and increasing venous, arterial and microcirculatory blood flow.

New NICE guidance (MTG19) supports the use of the geko™ device for people:

- Who have a high risk of VTE

- For whom pharmacological or other mechanical methods of VTE prevention are impractical or contraindicated

Clinical Applications:

- VTE prophylaxis: provided an anti-stasis intervention where previously patients would have had no other intervention available to them, ensuring no immobile stroke patient, with a high risk of VTE, was without a mechanical VTE prophylactic intervention.

- Pre-operative:

+ Oedema reduction: Accelerating readiness for surgery in ankle fracture patients requiring Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF).

+ Post-operative oedema prevention: Providing lower limb muscle pump activation to prevent the build-up of post-operative oedema following total or partial hip (THA) and knee arthroplasty (TKA).

- The increase in blood flow is equal to 60% of walking without a patient having to move.

- Wound Healing: Increases blood flow to capillaries to help shorten wound healing time
